The Special Events Society (SES)

Freshman year signed up for a few clubs on campus at JWU, although I've only exclusively been involved with the Special Events Society. It is the the only student chapter of the International Special Events Society. In SES we volunteer at special events throughout New England and have monthly meetings such as touring Mohegan Sun casino, or touring Future Affairs warehouse. Through SES I've networked so countless industry professionals and learned the "in" and the "outs" in the hospitality industry.

Being apart of the Special Events Society is something that I am very proud of. This is why I decided to run for a position on the executive board. I felt like it was time to take the next step and be involved as a leader. I ran for Director of Programs, this position oversees all the monthly meetings, and plans volunteer opportunities for all of the members to participate in.
Here is my speech:

Dear members of SES,
I’m a proud native of the Midwest, the heart of the nation, smack dap in the middle. IOWA! No not Ohio, and no not Idaho, we grow corn, not potatoes. When I ventured the 1,227 miles from home to New England I literally had no idea what I was doing. I knew I loved the hospitality industry; interacting with people came naturally (I’m the person you DON’T want to sit next to on an airplane) I was ecstatic that I was coming to Johnson & Wales University. Pursuing an event management degree seemed so practical and natural. I had finally found my place, JWU was the perfect fit!
So on that warm fall day in September I stepped out of my dorm on student activities night to be greeted by the beautiful smiling SES board! I was so excited & I raced to get my name on that list and the rest is history
Through SES I have networked with industry professionals, learned professional etiquette, gotten GREAT volunteer experience, and lets not forget, friendships that will last a lifetime.
I’ve decided to run for Director of Programs: I will oversee all program activity,
IE: monthly meetings, educational volunteer opportunities for members to participate in.
Doing so involves many interactions with professionals, calling, emailing, and planning. As I said before I am that guy you hope isn’t going to sit next to you on the airplane.
Creativity is something I feel like is a necessity for this position, coming up with programs and meetings each month for SESers is a never-ending research project. I’ll use my creativity to think of new fun, hands on learning experiences for all of us to participate in. Director of programs is an interesting position b/c it involves lots of communication with outside industry professionals. I’ll use my sometimes-obnoxious communication skills as a tool to communicate with the industry, not as a weakness, this I promise.
This club is something I have been so proud to be apart of, I’ve dedicated hundreds of hours to learn and develop my knowledge in this industry. I’ve seen SES grow and evolve into one of the most practical, beneficial, rewarding clubs on campus.
This is why: I ask you to please give me a chance to help SES grow and evolve into something even more amazing than it already is. The board does a GREAT job and works hard to give us an enjoyable & beneficial experience. Please let me join the Team. Ill work hard, and do everything I can to make SES the best decision you’ve made at Johnson & Wales university.
THANK YOU!

I am proud to say that my fellow SES members elected me into the position of Director of Programs. I am so excited to serve SES on the Executive Board. As I am also humbled and elated to have such great people standing by my side on the board!

President: Sydney Wolf
Vice President: Daina Massarelli
Director of Membership: Lyndsey Porter
Treasurer: Emma Kresge
Secretary: Sarah Wyman
Director of Education: Colleen Marasco
Director of Programs: David Boyle (me)

I start fulfilling my duties on the Executive Board starting in March and through the 2010-2011 school year. I can't wait to see what the next year will bring. I know that it will be great!

Haiti is Not Forgotten at the Golden Globes

Last night at the Golden Globes Hollywood celebrated and congratulated some of the amazing work done this year in film and television. They did so with poise and honor, although no one forgot the horrific events and challenges Haiti is still experiencing.
One of the most fashionable accessories this year at the Globes were Haiti relief ribbons that many A-list stars wore proudly with their designer gowns and tux's.

The Hollywood Foreign Press announced during the Globes that they were going to be donating $100,000 to Wyclef Jeans reilif funds for the victims of the 7.0 Richter rated earthquake.

Many stars voiced their concerns and thought on Haiti, reminding us that there is still much help needed.

Find out what you can do to help the victims of Haiti, it may be as easy as grabbing your favorite coffee from your local Starbucks who has donated $1 million to help. Customers can also make donations at the register when purchasing coffee.

New Year, New You, New Blog

In the first few days of the brand new bright 2010 I sat down to write the famous, New Year resolutions. Among the lengthly list of 12 resolutions were the classics: Go to bed earlier, exercise more, & save money. I ask the question, why does no one seem to keep their resolutions?

Research shows that 40 to 45% of American Adults make at least one resolution a year.

Okay, so about half the population makes Resolutions for the year. Heres where it gets a little depressing.

Studies have shown that 52% of people who make resolutions are confident that the goals they've set will be maintained and successful.

Only 12% of the peopled surveyed kept their resolutions.
Interesting enough, besides these depressing failures "resolution keeping." Men seemed to achieve their goals 22% more when they set smaller goals, such as losing a pound a week, as apposed to, lose 40 pounds this year!

While woman succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public, explaining to friends and family. This enables multiple support, instead of trying to do everything on your own.

With this being said, I add a 13th resolution to my list.

13) keep my resolutions
